4Warn Weather – Metro Detroit is expected to experience a spike in summer heat and a higher chance of multiple rounds of thunderstorms.
Under partly cloudy skies, temperatures are expected to fall to the mid-60s on Thursday night.
Friday
Friday will be a couple of degrees hotter, with the chance of storms. Expect highs in the upper-80s.
Thunderstorm and severe weather risk: A tale of two scenarios
Along with rising temperatures, the 4Warn Weather team is tracking the risk of severe thunderstorms on both Friday and Saturday.
Friday’s risk comes with two possible scenarios:
- Scenario #1: The strongest thunderstorms develop mostly to the west and north, brushing the Thumb in the late afternoon and evening and possibly missing parts of Metro Detroit. Some areas may see little or no rain.
- Scenario #2: A more widespread area of strong to severe storms could roll through almost all of Southeast Michigan, bringing heavy downpours and gusty winds Friday afternoon and evening.
The region is under a slight (level two out of five) severe weather risk from I-69 southward, with more limited risks north of I-69 on Friday.
The main threat from any severe storms would be gusty winds. If you plan to attend the Uncle Sam Jam Festival in Woodhaven, Art in the Park in Plymouth, or any other outdoor events, be sure to access Exact Track 4D Radar on the 4Warn Weather app on your phone.
If the storms develop in Metro Detroit on Friday, the threat for severe weather could last until about 11 p.m.
Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy. Lows will be around 70 degrees.
Saturday
Saturday will bring another chance of strong to severe thunderstorms. While people should be on alert during the daytime for changes, it looks like the strong to severe storms could arrive during the evening or even nighttime hours. The heat and moisture will fuel storms.
Apart from the storm chances, the forecast calls for mostly sunny skies. Plan for temperatures to peak around 90 degrees on Saturday, with the heat index expected to reach the mid-90s.
The chance of thunderstorms could continue into the overnight hours. Lows will be around 70 degrees.
Sunday will also be hot, with the chance of thunderstorms lingering into the morning and popping up in the afternoon. Expect highs in the mid-80s and lows in the mid-60s.
Weekly Outlook: Warmth sticks around
It’s not just the weekend that will stay hot and muggy; temperatures in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees are expected into next week.
Humid nights in the upper 60s and lower 70s will create sticky conditions over several days.
Remember to stay hydrated and be aware of daily storm risks.
