Air Quality Alert issued in Michigan due to Canadian wildfires -- What you need to know

Air Quality Alert remains in effect through tonight

DETROIT – A sunny and hot start to the week with less humidity today and Tuesday. Temperatures rise close to 90 both days, however, the wildfire smoke from Central Canada lingers across Michigan today leading to an Air Quality Alert through tonight for the state.

It is recommended that, when possible, you avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially those with heart disease and respiratory diseases like asthma. Monitor for symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning in nose, throat, and eyes. Reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution, such as:

  • Outdoor burning
  • Use of residential wood burning devices

Tips for households:

  • Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors and, if possible, run central air conditioning with MERV-13 or higher rated filters.

Storm chances this week

Showers and thunderstorms return Wednesday through Thursday. Heavy rainfall is the primary concern at this time. Highs will remain in the 80s. A cold front sweeps through the area early Friday followed by more seasonal and less humid air this weekend.
