Air Quality Alert continues in Southeast Michigan; Here’s when storms could return

Air Quality Alert continues in Southeast Michigan due to Canadian wildfires

DETROIT – It’s shaping up to be a Toasty Tuesday. Today will likely be the warmest day of the week as highs top out around 90, but humidity still stays on the lower side under hazy skies. The wildfire smoke from Central Canada lingers across Michigan which extended the Air Quality Alert for Southeast Michigan through tonight.

It is recommended that, when possible, you avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially those with heart disease and respiratory diseases like asthma. Monitor for symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning in nose, throat, and eyes. Reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air pollution, such as:

  • Outdoor burning
  • Use of residential wood burning devices

Tips for households:

  • Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors and, if possible, run central air conditioning with MERV-13 or higher rated filters.

Storm chances midweek

Shower and thunderstorm chances return Wednesday and Thursday with potential for heavy rainfall. There is a marginal (level 1 risk) for storms to reach severe limits on Wednesday. In the wake of a cold front, a cooler and less humid airmass builds in Friday through the weekend.
