Stubborn wildfire smoke staying through weekend in Metro Detroit: Here’s why

Wildfire smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to impact the Great Lakes region, including Southeast Michigan.

As wildfire smoke expands over Lower Michigan, a high-pressure system is contributing to light winds and stagnant air. The system’s influence on the region’s weather will wane on Monday.

While the scattering of light through the smoke can lead to vibrant sunrises and sunsets, often with deeper red and orange hues, the smoke can reduce visibility and affect people’s health.

Some people are merely noticing the hazy skies, while others are experiencing irritation. Some people can smell the smoke or even notice burning in their nose, eyes, or throat.

The air will be bad for people who are sensitive to air pollution and possibly becoming “unhealthy” for everyone.

If you start feeling having those symptoms, go indoors. It is best to keep windows closed until the air quality improves. It is recommended to postpone strenuous outdoor activities until the Air Quality Alert has passed.

Apart from the hazy skies, the weather will remain mostly calm this weekend. The high-pressure system will also limit cloud development.

Saturday Night

Expect mostly clear to partly cloudy skies on Saturday night. Lows will be in the mid-50s to 60 degrees.

Sunday

Sunday will keep the mostly sunny and hazy skies. The wildfire smoke is expected to denser north of I-69. Daytime winds will be out of the east at 5 to 10 mph. Highs will reach the lower-80s, and lows will be in the lower-60s.

Looking Ahead

The clear skies and near-normal should continue into the start of the workweek, but a pop-up rain shower cannot be ruled out for late Tuesday through Thursday. Most of next week will see highs in the mid-80s and lows in the 60s.
