4Warn Weather – Get ready for a hot, muggy, and occasionally stormy weekend.
Friday afternoon readings showed most of Southeast Michigan in the lower to mid-80s, providing a nice end to the workweek.
The forecast calls for a pleasant yet muggy night ahead, with lows in the mid-to-upper 60s. Winds will be from the south at around five mph and will calm.
Hot and humid conditions expected Saturday
The heat will rev up on Saturday. Afternoon temperatures will reach the lower 90s, but it will feel even hotter.
The heat index or “real-feel temperatures” will be near 95 degrees due to rising humidity. While Friday brought nice but noticeable humidity, the stickiness is forecast to intensify for Saturday.
If you are making plans, whether that is walking to the air-conditioned Ford Field for the Lions game, enjoying the Woodward Dream Cruise, or attending AfroFuture Detroit or the Michigan Renaissance Festival near Holly, be sure to pace yourself and stay hydrated.
Storm risk: Isolated thunderstorms possible Saturday and Sunday
There is a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms as we move into Saturday afternoon and evening, especially for areas west of Interstate 75.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop around 5 and 6 p.m., with the possibility of storms lingering until around midnight.
The risk for severe weather remains “marginal,” or level one of five, across all of Southeast Michigan; however, areas west of I-75 are in the spotlight for any stronger storms that may develop.
These patterns are expected to repeat on Sunday afternoon and evening, with the primary focus again being west of I-75.
So, keep an umbrella handy if you’re headed out—and keep an eye on the radar for sudden changes.
Besides the chance of showers and storms, Sunday is expected to be hot and muggy. Temperatures will peak in the mid-80s, with lows in the mid-60s.
Tracking the Tropics
Hurricane Erin became a hurricane on Friday as it neared the Leeward Islands.
Although it was rated a low-end Category 1 storm, Hurricane Erin is forecast to become a major hurricane over the weekend.
It is expected to strengthen into a Category 3 on Saturday and possibly become a Category 4 by Saturday night or Sunday morning.
The hurricane is expected to pass north of the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico and veer northward.
The northern trajectory should keep the center of Erin away from the U.S. mainland, but impacts will be felt.
Tropical-storm force winds could reach parts of the East Coast, such as North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
Dangerous rip currents and large waves are expected to threaten parts of the coast by midweek.
Outlook for early next week: Lingering rain, cooling temperatures
Relief from the heat is on the way after the weekend, as temperatures are forecast to dip back to the lower to mid-80s to start the workweek.
Showers and some thunderstorms could hang around into Monday and Tuesday.
Expect the return of more comfortable and seasonable summer weather as the week goes on.
