Fall-like temperatures settle in across Metro Detroit
You probably noticed that unmistakable chill in the air. Fall-like weather has arrived just in time for what is often called the “unofficial end of summer”: Labor Day.
Highs during the final week of August would typically be around 80 degrees, but some Southeast Michigan communities failed to even reach 70 degrees on Monday afternoon.
These temperatures are what you would expect in late September or early October.
A few showers and an isolated thunderstorm will continue to be possible into the evening hours. Otherwise, expect mostly cloudy skies.
Get ready for a cool night. Overnight lows are expected to dip into the upper 30s for northern communities like Sandusky and Lapeer. Many Metro Detroit suburbs will settle in the 40s, but areas closer to Detroit will be near 50 degrees. For comparison, the average lows for late August are in the lower-60s. So, this is a noticeable drop for some students’ first week back to school.
Tuesday
Tuesday will be partly cloudy in Southeast Michigan, with highs in the upper-60 to 70 degrees, but morning and nighttime temperatures will be cold. Many locations will be in the 40s as students are heading to school. Be sure to wear or keep a jacket or hoodie nearby. Tuesday night’s lows will be in the upper-40s, which is near record-low territory.
Temperatures will climb a few degrees on Wednesday. Under partly cloudy skies, highs will be in the lower- to mid-70s. Wednesday night’s lows will be in the lower-50s. Plan for similar temperatures for the rest of the week.
Spotty rain chances, mainly north and late in the week
While much of the week will be dry, watch out for a couple of rain chances. Tuesday could see an isolated passing shower, mainly south of I-94, but the odds are low. The best chance for rain arrives later in the week when a cold front moves through on Thursday, bringing increased rain chances by Thursday afternoon and evening.
Labor Day weekend brings a slight warm-up, but temperatures stay below average
Looking ahead to the holiday weekend, temperatures are forecast to climb back into the mid- to upper-70s by Labor Day itself. The good news: once the cold front passes through Thursday, high pressure returns, setting up a dry stretch into Labor Day Monday. Want to go to an orchard? It will be perfect for outdoor family plans, besides the chill in the air.
