Atmosphere working to give Metro Detroit a warm, sunny Labor Day weekend

Weather expected to stay sunny through midweek before storms and colder air return

Chilly weekend mornings give way to warming trend

Metro Detroiters will be flocking to festivals, fairs, parades, lakes, parks, backyards, cider mills and orchards this weekend.

You probably have plans. The weather will not throw a wrench in them.

Following Saturday afternoon temperatures in the lower-70s, the evening will feel chilly.

Wolverines fans may need to don their jackets as temperatures cool into the 50s after the game.

Under partly cloudy to mostly clear skies, lows will be in the mid-40s in the Thumb, mid- to upper-40s near Adrian, Ann Arbor and Brighton, and lower-50s in Detroit, Westland, Troy and Sterling Heights. The wind will become calm.

This kind of weather sets the tone for a classic late August: mornings start with chill in the air, but afternoons finish with a warmup.

Going to the Detroit Jazz Festival; Michigan State Fair in Novi; Michigan Renaissance Festival in Holly; Hamtramck Labor Day Festival; Romeo Peach Festival; or Arts, Beats & Eats in Royal Oak? Sunday and Monday will be great weather days.

Sunday

Skies will be sunny on Sunday, with highs in the mid-70s. Winds will be out of the northeast at around 5 mph. Sunday night’s skies will be mostly clear as temperatures fall into the lower- to mid-50s.

Monday

Overall, Labor Day should be sunny, warm, and dry, which is perfect for events like parades, barbecues, or other outdoor gatherings. Highs will be in the upper-70s.

Boating Forecast

Going on the water? The Labor Day forecast looks fantastic for boaters. Light easterly winds and mirror-like waves will make for smooth boating. Under sunny skies, waves will be under 1 foot. But watch out midweek, starting around Wednesday, when winds pick up and showers or storms become possible. Keep an eye on forecasts if heading out later in the week.

Big changes possible midweek

Looking into next week, the forecast brings a few more twists. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to move in late Wednesday and Thursday as a new cold front sweeps through Southeast Michigan. This front is expected to bring a noticeable drop in temperatures, with daytime highs falling below average again for the weekend that follows.
