Sunny, mild Labor Day kicks off week of changing weather in Metro Detroit

Tuesday, Wednesday highs in lower 80s

Metro Detroit is getting warmer. Temperatures will peak around 80 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday, but a drastic cooldown arrives late week. (WDIV)

4Warn Weather – The sunshine seen over the weekend is expected to stick around for this Labor Day and the next couple of days. The gentle warming trend will also continue.

Under mostly clear to partly cloudy skies, the sun will set at 8:07 p.m. on Monday at Metro Airport.

Temperatures are expected to fall to around 70 degrees by 9 p.m.

Overnight, lows will be in the upper 40s in the Thumb, lower 50s in Brighton and Clinton Township, and mid-50s in Detroit and Monroe.

Northern Lights

If you are hoping for a light show in the sky, you might have a chance due to a G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm.

The aurora borealis, or northern lights, could extend southward into the Northern U.S. on Monday night.

The best chance to see them will be looking toward near the northern horizon, away from light pollution or ground light sources, and from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

The chance of viewing will be better over the U.P. and Northern Michigan. The farther north a person is located, the better the odds.

Driving to or from Southeast Michigan? Conditions will be dry and calm across the Great Lakes region with few exceptions.

A couple of showers and isolated thunderstorms were impacting the Upper Peninsula on Monday.

Tuesday

For those with schoolchildren, plan for a cool start in the mid-50s on Tuesday morning and a rebound into the 70s by early afternoon.

Temperatures will peak at 80 degrees mid-afternoon, with southerly winds of around five mph.

Expect sunshine, but a few clouds will build in the afternoon.

Tuesday night’s skies will be mostly clear. Lows will be in the lower- to mid-50s.

Midweek brings rain and a drop in temperatures

The weather will take a turn. Wednesday will begin with mostly sunny skies, but clouds will build later in the day.

Afternoon temperatures will reach the lower 80s in many locations. Winds out of the south-southwest will be around 10 mph, with gusts around 20 mph.

Rain showers will be possible starting Wednesday night and continuing into Thursday morning as a cold front approaches the area.

Thursday morning is expected to be wet and cool. Allow extra time for your walk or drive.

Early morning temperatures will be in the 50s.

There will be little to no improvement in the afternoon.

Expect highs only in the mid-60s. The average high for Sept. 4 is 78 degrees.

Next weekend, with a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures will range from the mid- to upper-60s during the day to the mid- to upper-40s at night.
