Metro Detroit will be heading into an unsettled stretch of weather next week. After a dry August and a mostly dry September so far, Southeast Michigan is in need of rain—and there is finally a break in sight.
Clouds will build late Saturday and skies will become mostly cloudy. A couple of sprinkles will be possibly overnight, but most people will have to wait to see rain. Overnight lows will be near 60 degrees in Westland, Southfield, Roseville, and Taylor. Lows will be in the mid 50s in the Thumb.
Drought
Rainfall has been especially scarce across the region recently. Northern parts of Southeast Michigan are experiencing a moderate drought (classified as D1), while most other communities are marked abnormally dry (D0) on the drought monitor. The dry pattern is expected to shift Sunday and continue into next week.
Sunday
The much-needed moisture will come with the threat of heavy rain and strong storms. The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of southeast Michigan under a marginal (level 1 of 5) risk for severe weather on Sunday, which means a few strong storms and an isolated severe thunderstorm are possible. The threat stretches from the Great Lakes through the Ohio Valley. The strongest storms could bring gusty winds and heavy downpours with the risk of localized flooding.
If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued for your area, head indoors immediately. It is advised to stay away from windows and plumbing, and avoid using electrical appliances until the storm passes. In the case of a flash flood warning, never attempt to drive through flooded roadways.
A shower may pop up in the morning, but it is during the afternoon—after 2 or 3 p.m.—when thunderstorms are most likely to develop. The threat of storms will continue into the evening, and rain showers will be possible into the overnight hours.
Otherwise, Sunday’s highs will be in the lower-80s. Lows will be in the lower-60s.
Temps will begin to slip during the workweek.
Monday
The first official day of fall arrives on Monday, but it will be a soggy start to the new season. Rain showers are expected throughout the day with highs in the mid- to upper-70s and lows in the lower-60s.
Tuesday through Thursday
More unsettled weather lingers into Tuesday and Wednesday, both featuring chances for rain. Tuesday will be slightly warmer at 78 degrees, while Wednesday turns cooler with highs in the lower- to mid-70s. By Thursday, the pattern calms, with just a slight chance of rain and partly cloudy skies as highs remain in the lower-70s.
Friday
Another disturbance may bring showers back to Metro Detroit on Friday and keep highs steady in the lower- to mid-70s.
Saturday
As the weekend arrives, Saturday looks partly sunny and pleasant with a high of 73 degrees. The conditions will make it one of the more comfortable and drier days in the seven-day outlook.
Sunday
Overall, the upcoming week will feature several rounds of rain and cooler, seasonable temperatures settling in after Sunday’s brief warm-up. For outdoor plans, keep the umbrella handy through midweek, and use caution and take shelter when any threatening weather approaches.
