When is it going to snow in Metro Detroit? First snowflakes likely just days away

Measurable snow likely on Sunday morning

DETROIT – When is it going to snow in Metro Detroit? Believe it or not, the first snowflakes of the season are likely just days away.

At least one weather model has been suggesting for the past few days that Southeast Michigan could have a wintry mix this weekend, and now multiple models have started to align.

There’s still some uncertainty, but just three and a half days out, it appears we’re going to get some measurable snowfall.

Widespread rainfall is going to arrive Friday, and more moves in late Saturday night. Temperatures drop heading into Sunday, so rain is likely to transition into snow on Sunday morning.

At the very least, the southern half of Southeast Michigan is likely to get measurable snow on Sunday.

It’s too early to talk exact snowfall totals, but at minimum, we’re expecting a tenth of an inch. There’s a chance that some people in the area will need to shovel, but since the ground isn’t frozen, most of the snow that we do get won’t stick.

It appears there are more snow chances as lake-effect bands develop on Monday, especially as lows dip into the low to mid-20s by Monday morning, with wind chills potentially in the single digits to our west.
