Snow and rain Sunday in Metro Detroit -- here’s when, where, and how much to expect

Snow showers remain in forecast for Monday

Rain and snow showers will continue as we work through the end of the weekend on Sunday (WDIV)

4Warn Weather – Snow and rain are both in the forecast for Metro Detroit on Sunday and into the start of the workweek.

SUNDAY: Cloudy skies. A chance of rain and snow showers. Snow showers with a light accumulation possible on grassy and elevated surfaces, Northwest of Metro Detroit. High: 39.

SUNDAY NIGHT: Cloudy skies. Rain and snow showers changing to snow showers. Much colder. Low: 27.

MONDAY: Mostly cloudy skies. A chance of snow showers. High: 36.

MONDAY NIGHT: Decreasing clouds, partly cloudy skies. Low: 24.

TUESDAY: Mostly cloudy skies. Continued cold. High: 38.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy skies. Another cold overnight. Low: 31.

After a dry start to the weekend, we’re watching our first round of winter weather move into the region for the end of the weekend and start of next week.

An area of low pressure is moving south of the region through the Ohio Valley on Sunday Morning, and with plenty of moisture, this will continue our chance of winter weather for Sunday.

This will bring a chance of rain and snow showers for most of the region, but the further north and west you go for Metro Detroit, the colder air will hang on, and snow showers will be the primary rule through a good chunk of the day on Sunday.

This will be our first shot of accumulating snow by the end of the weekend and into early next week. We could see a few inches of snow well Northwest of Metro Detroit, but what actually accumulates on grassy and elevated surfaces will not be much as the ground is too warm to sustain any real accumulation.

We only need 1/10 of an inch of snow to qualify as our first accumulating snow, and I anticipate that, especially by Monday.

Any rain and snow showers will switch completely over to snow showers for everybody late Sunday night and continue until Monday.

Thanks to a northwest flow kicking in.

This is our traditional lake-effect snow shower event, but it’s also going to bring in a reinforcing shot of colder air by the start of next week. High temperatures will drop into the mid-30s by Sunday, and continue to fall into the low to mid-30s by the start of next week on Monday. As we head out the door on Monday morning, with the gusty winds, we will have wind chills into the single digits and low to mid-teens, so we will need to bundle up as we head out the door tomorrow morning.

We will keep some cloud cover in the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, with warmer temperatures starting to move into the region. High temperatures remaining in the 30s by Tuesday, then into the upper 40s by Wednesday.

The drier weather continues, looking ahead into the end of next week and the start of next weekend. We will keep some sunshine and clouds in the forecast for Thursday and into Friday. High temperatures continue to warm up for everyone. We’re expecting high temperatures into the upper 40s on Thursday, then back into the 50s by Friday.

We will bring more cloud cover into the forecast by the start of next weekend, on Saturday, and high temperatures will continue to get warmer as well. Expect high temperatures into the mid-50s by Saturday afternoon.
