Up to a few inches of snow for parts of SE Michigan -- here’s how long snowfall will last

Precipitation fully switches over to snow late Sunday night

DETROIT – Parts of Southeast Michigan could get a few inches of snow on Sunday, but how long will the snowfall last?

The season’s first round of winter weather moved into Metro Detroit on Sunday morning.

The further north and west you are in Metro Detroit, the more colder air hangs on, so snow showers will be the primary rule through a good chunk of Sunday.

Our first shot of accumulating snow is the end of the weekend and into early next week. We could see a few inches of show well northwest of Metro Detroit, but what actually accumulates on grassy and elevated surfaces won’t be much. The ground is too warm.

It only takes one-tenth of an inch of snow to qualify as “accumulating,” and we’re likely to hit that threshold, especially by Monday.

Any rain or rain-snow mixtures will switch completely over to snow for everybody late Sunday night. Snow will continue until Monday, thanks to a northwest flow kicking in.

This is a traditional lake-effect snow event, but it’s also going to bring in a reinforcing shot of colder air by the start of next week.

High temperatures drop into the mid-30s by Sunday. They continue to tumble into Monday.

Drier weather arrives during the week and continues looking ahead to the start of next weekend.
