Southeast Michigan is heading into the Christmas holiday with generally quiet weather, though travelers will want to stay alert for a potential wintry mix late in the week, especially for any travel Friday morning.
Low clouds, patchy fog, and drizzle Tuesday morning will give way to drier conditions as warm air moves into Southeast Michigan. Any lingering slick spots were expected to be isolated and short-lived as temperatures were above freezing in most spots. Highs will climb into the mid-40s across Metro Detroit, which is 10 degrees above normal.
Tuesday night will be mostly cloudy, with lows in the mid- to upper-20s.
Wednesday
Wednesday will be cooler, with the chance of isolated flurries and sprinkles. Expect highs in the mid-30s to near 40 degrees, with the cooler readings across the Thumb and warmer temperatures closer to Detroit and areas south. Clouds will remain common, though as precipitation chances stay low.
Christmas
On Christmas Day, temperatures rebound slightly. Highs are expected to reach the upper-30s to lower-40s across Metro Detroit, while the Thumb remains a few degrees cooler. Travel conditions on Christmas Day itself look favorable, with mostly dry weather expected for most of Southeast Michigan.
Attention then turns to Thursday night into Friday, when a developing system is forecast to track near the Michigan-Ohio border. With temperatures hovering near the freezing mark, there is the potential for a wintry mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain, particularly during the Friday morning commute. Even light icing could cause localized travel issues if surface temperatures cool to freezing.
National Weather
Beyond Michigan, there is more active weather. Heavy rain is expected across parts of California, with flooding concerns continuing midweek. Meanwhile, the Northeast will join the Great Lakes in seeing periods of snow or mixed precipitation as systems move east, potentially affecting long-distance holiday travel.
