Gusty winds and slick roads continue across southeast Michigan on this Monday. It has been a day marked by sharp temperature swings, snow squalls and hazardous travel conditions. A Wind Advisory will remain in effect until 9 p.m. for all of Southeast Michigan.

A 4Warn Weather Alert continues for the snow, gusty winds, and slick roads.

While the earlier threat of snow squalls has ended, scattered snow showers persist in parts of the region.

Travel impacts will linger.

Combined with strong northwest winds, the snow has left roads slick in spots, especially on untreated surfaces, bridges and overpasses. Snow and blowing snow may still briefly reduce visibility, and a few tree branches could come down with higher wind gusts.

Monday’s weather was a study in extremes. The peak temperature of 59 degrees was observed at midnight, following a Sunday night high near 61 degrees, before dropping sharply below the freezing mark by morning. The rapid temperature fall contributed to icy conditions as moisture on roadways froze.

Strong winds have added to the discomfort. Wind chills fell into the teens across much of Southeast Michigan, with single-digit wind chills reported in some communities. The cold, combined with gusty winds, have made outdoor activities uncomfortable and risky for those spending extended time outside.

Monday night, skies will be mostly cloudy with a few lake-effect snow showers. Lows will be around 20 degrees. Winds will be out of the west-northwest at 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

Tuesday

Looking ahead, conditions remain cold heading into Tuesday. Skies will stay mostly cloudy, with temperatures struggling to climb into the 20s. Another round of snow showers is possible Tuesday evening, though accumulations will be light.

New Years’ Weather

Snow chances continue into midweek as the region approaches New Year’s Eve on Wednesday and New Year’s Day on Thursday. Periodic snow showers are possible both days, keeping roads potentially slick at times, especially overnight and during early morning hours. Temperatures will remain seasonably cold, with daytime highs near 30 degrees on Wednesday and lower-20s on Thursday. A brisk wind will add to the chill.

Relief may arrive toward the weekend, when temperatures are expected to moderate closer to normal for early January, though clouds are likely to linger.

In the meantime, drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time and remain alert for changing road conditions, particularly during the evening hours while winds remain strong.
