4Warn Weather – A period of rain and light freezing rain could create slick roads and sidewalks across parts of Southeast Michigan early Tuesday morning, before temperatures rise above freezing and precipitation changes to all rain.
A warm front lifting into the region may produce a brief window of freezing rain overnight and into the early morning hours on Tuesday.
Any ice accumulation is expected to be light, but even a thin glaze could make untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses slippery during the morning commute.
The highest confidence for minor icing is in higher-elevation areas, including portions of Lenawee, Washtenaw, Livingston, Oakland, and Lapeer counties. In most areas, temperatures are expected to climb above 32 degrees by late morning or early afternoon, leading to all rain.
In addition to the rain, patchy fog is also expected on Tuesday. Highs will climb into the upper 30s to lower 40s.
The fog could further reduce visibility at times, adding to travel concerns.
Later this week
Later this week, temperatures will trend milder. Highs are expected to reach the mid to upper 40s on Thursday and near 50 degrees on Friday, with periods of rain. Cooler air returns this weekend, bringing the chance of rain mixing with snow Saturday and a chance of snow Sunday, as highs fall back into the 30s.
Travel and safety tips
- Slow down: Roads may look wet but could be icy, especially before sunrise.
- Watch bridges and overpasses: These surfaces freeze first and often remain icy longer.
- Increase following distance: Allow extra space between vehicles in case of sudden stops.
- Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns: Gentle movements help maintain traction.
- Use headlights in fog and precipitation: Low visibility may be an issue during the morning hours.
- Pedestrians should use caution: Sidewalks, steps, and parking lots may be slick. Drivers are urged to check the latest forecasts and road conditions before heading out Tuesday morning and allow extra time for travel where freezing rain occurs.
