Arctic tundra returns to Metro Detroit -- what to know about upcoming snow showers

Tumbling temperatures and snow showers ahead of subzero wind chills

Pockets of light drizzle and scattered rain showers to our northwest this morning will quickly transition to light snow showers as they move into our area and are expected to linger through the afternoon.

We are anticipating accumulations between a dusting to a half inch for most of Metro Detroit, with isolated amounts near 1 inch in our northern communities. However, a Winter Storm Watch goes into effect for eastern Huron and northeastern Sanilac counties starting at 3PM through Thursday morning due to the potential for persistent lake effect bands that could produce 5-7″ of snow close to the shoreline.

Temperatures will continue to fall across the area today as an arctic airmass arrives in the wake of a cold front.

Right on cue, Auto Show weather arrives. We will be much colder the rest of the week and into this weekend. In fact, Thursday morning wind chill readings will likely drop below zero. Off and on chances for snow return Friday through the weekend.

Highs will only reach the 20s with early morning lows on Monday and Tuesday falling into the single digits.
