DETROIT – Don’t put your shovels away yet -- more snow is on the way.

Wednesday’s snowfall was heavier than expected due to lake effect moisture, which was significantly underestimated by all model data.

Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches remain possible Thursday, with lake effect snow showers tapering off by midday.

There is a small window of clearing possible Thursday afternoon.

More snow on the way

The snow isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, we will be adding more to what is out there.

A series of clipper systems will bring much colder air and potential for accumulating snow to Southeast Michigan from Friday into the weekend.

Friday alone could bring another 1 to 3 inches of snow. A few flurries are expected overnight, but most of the accumulation is expected late Friday morning through midday.

Deep Freeze

The snow won’t melt anytime soon. Colder-than-average conditions are expected to continue over the next two weeks.

Highs this weekend will only be in the 20s, with subzero wind chills expected early next week.
