From flurries to 50s: Metro Detroit set to thaw out -- what to expect and when

Dry Valentine’s Day, mild Presidents’ Day as Southeast Michigan warms up

4Warn Weather – After a stretch of cold air and occasional flurries, a gradual warming trend is setting up across Metro Detroit, bringing temperatures closer to, and eventually above, seasonal averages through the upcoming holiday weekend and into next week.

Thursday

Thursday morning lows will dip into the upper teens to 20 degrees. High temperatures will remain near typical mid-February levels, topping out around 30 degrees under a mix of sunshine and clouds.

Friday

By Friday, a noticeable shift begins as southwest winds usher in slightly milder air. Afternoon highs climb into the upper 30s, signaling the start of a steady temperature rebound.

Valentine’s Day Forecast: Chilly start, milder finish

Saturday marks Valentine’s Day, and while it may not feel like spring yet, conditions look favorable for dinner reservations, evening strolls, and other plans across the region.

Temperatures are expected to peak near 40 degrees in Metro Detroit, with mid- to upper 30s in communities north, including the Thumb.

Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy, but dry weather is expected.

Temperatures will ease back into the lower 30s by late evening.

Those heading out for dinner or events should plan for a winter coat, especially after sunset, but no precipitation or hazardous travel conditions are anticipated.

Presidents’ Day Weekend: Quiet and seasonably mild

Sunday continues the gradual warming trend, with highs near 40 degrees.

Cloud cover may increase at times, but mostly dry weather remains the dominant theme.

Monday, Presidents’ Day, looks similar.

Highs again reach around 40 degrees, making it a relatively comfortable day for those off work or school.

As a federal holiday, banks, government offices, and most schools will be closed, but weather conditions should support smooth travel across Southeast Michigan.

Morning lows throughout the weekend will generally be in the mid- to upper 20s, so refreezing is possible overnight.

However, no widespread wintry precipitation is expected to complicate plans.

Warmer air builds next week

High temperatures are forecast to climb into the lower 40s Tuesday and potentially reach the lower 50s by Wednesday. (WDIV)

The warming trend becomes more pronounced by Tuesday and Wednesday as high pressure strengthens over the Midwest.

High temperatures are forecast to climb into the lower 40s on Tuesday and potentially reach the lower 50s by Wednesday.

Temperatures of 50 degrees and above would put the region roughly 15 to 20 degrees above normal for mid-February, when average highs typically sit in the mid-30s.

The milder air could lead to gradual snowmelt, creating wetter conditions on neighborhood streets and in yards.

Drivers should remain alert for overnight refreezing during the early part of the warmup, though that risk diminishes as nighttime temperatures rise.

For now, the overall pattern favors dry weather and a steady thaw, which is a welcome change as Metro Detroit moves deeper into the second half of February.
