4Warn Weather Alert declared for Sunday and Monday; here’s what to expect

Wintry weather, strong thunderstorms, and gusty winds will all be possible in Southeast Michigan to start the week

4Warn Weather - A low pressure system moving across the state will bring wintry weather, strong storms, and high winds across Southeast Michigan Sunday and Monday. Here’s how it all plays out over the next couple of days.

TONIGHT

Snow and wintry mix move into Southeast Michigan this evening. The best chance to see a dusting to an inch or so will be near the I-94 corridor and northward, and into the northern Thumb region 1-3″ of snow is possible tonight.

Huron, Tuscola, and Sanilac counties will be under a Winter Weather Advisory from midnight tonight until 11:00 a.m. Sunday.

Our southward communities will see little to no accumulation with more of a wintry mix likely. Overnight low temperatures will be in the upper 20s to low 30s as southeasterly winds increase to 10-15 mph.

SUNDAY

We could see a brief period of freezing rain as snow and mix transition to rain in the morning.

We’ll then catch a bit of a break with mostly cloudy skies as the warm front lifts northward. This helps temperatures to soar into the low to mid 60s.

Winds will shift from the southeast to south at 15-20 mph, gusting up to 50 mph at times. A Wind Advisory has been issued for the I-69 corridor and southward from 11:00 a.m. Sunday morning until midnight.

SUNDAY NIGHT

Scattered rain moves in during the evening but we’ll have the best chance for more widespread rain and thunderstorms overnight into Monday morning as the cold front moves through.

The Storm Prediction Center has Southeast Michigan under Marginal and Slight risks (levels 1 and 2 out of 5) for the potential of severe storms late Sunday night into early Monday morning.

The main threat with these storms will be damaging winds but an isolated tornado is possible.

Temperatures will only fall to the lower 50s during this time frame.

MONDAY

As the cold front moves through Southeast Michigan winds will shift to the west, staying up at 20-25 mph, gusting up to 50 mph at times.

Temperatures fall throughout the day Monday. After starting the early morning hours near 50° we’ll be in the 30s for the afternoon.

With dropping temps we could see scattered snow to end the day Monday.

LOOKING AHEAD

It will be cold Monday night with temperatures dropping to the teens. Wind chills Tuesday morning will be near 0°.

Highs Tuesday will remain in the upper 20s under mostly cloudy skies.

Wednesday’s highs will only be in the mid 30s before we look to get back to around 50° to end the week.
