4Warn Weather – If it feels like Southeast Michigan is riding a weather roller coaster, that’s because it is.
Metro Detroit surged into the 70s Friday, a burst of warmth that felt more like late May than March.
People ditched winter coats, stepped outside in short sleeves, and soaked in the sun rays on this first day of spring.
By Saturday, temperatures will return to normal and struggle to reach 50 degrees, a sharp drop that serves as a reminder that this is still March in Michigan, where dramatic swings are part of the deal.
The warmth on Friday is being driven by a surge of mild air ahead of an approaching system, while cooler air near the lakes is already keeping areas like the Thumb much chillier, with highs stuck in the 40s.
Weekend forecast
That temperature contrast continues into the weekend before a cold front moves through Sunday afternoon, bringing scattered showers and even the chance of an isolated thunderstorm, mainly near the Ohio border.
For those heading to Downtown Detroit Friday night, including fans attending the Pistons game at Little Caesars Arena, the changing conditions will be noticeable throughout the evening.
The walk into the arena will feel mild and comfortable, with temperatures in the 60s.
By the time the game ends, temperatures will fall to near 50 degrees, and a light chill will settle in, especially with any breeze moving between buildings.
That means what you wear matters. Short sleeves will feel great early on, but a light jacket or hoodie will make a big difference for the walk back.
It is not a winter-coat kind of night, but it is not quite summer either.
It is one of those classic in-between evenings where you will be glad you brought an extra layer.
Looking Ahead
After the weekend front moves through, the roller coaster continues.
Temperatures drop back into the low 40s by Monday, falling below normal and bringing a more seasonable and noticeably cooler feel to start the new week.
While a brief rain-to-snow mix is possible late Sunday, no accumulation is expected.
