Metro Detroit is in for another active weather day as scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms develop this afternoon and evening. The greatest coverage is expected between noon and 10 p.m., with a few storms capable of becoming strong to severe. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, there is a marginal (level 1 out of 5) risk for our western suburbs where isolated storms may produce damaging wind gusts and large hail. Temperatures will remain comfortable despite the unsettled weather, with highs reaching the mid to upper 70s across Southeast Michigan with breezy conditions.
Have a soccer or baseball game outside Wednesday? It will likely be a washout. The active pattern returns Wednesday midday and continues into Wednesday evening as another round of widespread showers and thunderstorms moves into the region. Light, steady rain could arrive as early as the lunch hour, but the most significant weather threat appears to be focused south of I-94 after 6pm. In those areas, flash flooding will be the primary concern. Some locations could receive up to 2 inches of rainfall in a relatively short period of time, leading to ponding on roads and localized flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Remember: never drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don’t drown.
Looking beyond the midweek rain, a refreshing stretch of weather is setting up across Metro Detroit. Temperatures are expected to remain slightly below average through the rest of the week and into the weekend with afternoon highs generally staying in the 70s. The cooler air will also bring comfortable nights with lows dropping into the 50s each night. It’s the kind of weather that allows you to open the windows, enjoy the fresh air, and give the air conditioning a much-needed break.
While periodic rain chances will continue, the overall temperature pattern favors pleasant summer conditions without the intense heat and humidity that often settle into the region this time of year.
