Detroit woman charged with fatally shooting boyfriend during argument over personal items

Starr Holmes charged with second-degree murder

DETROIT – A Detroit woman was officially charged Monday with murder in the killing of her boyfriend over the weekend at a gas station on the city's west side.

Starr Holmes, 25, is charged with second-degree murder and a felony firearms violation after the shooting death of her boyfriend, Pap Jenkins.

Holmes appeared Monday before a judge.

Police said Holmes and Jenkins got into an argument over unreturned personal items at the Marathon gas station on Grand River Avenue near Wyoming Avenue on Detroit's west side.

Holmes pulled out a gun during the argument and shot Jenkins, police said. Her lawyer, Todd Kaluzny, said Holmes acted in self-defense and asked the judge to set bond.

"Miss Holmes is someone who's never been in trouble or arrested," Kaluzny said. "No criminal history ... No mental health history or substance abuse history."

Kaluzny's request for bond was denied.

"As you indicated, this is a serious charge," the judge said. "Somebody did die in this matter. This is going to be a remand."

Family members said Holmes "doesn't deserve this," Her lawyer said he hasn't seen the police report.

"From what I hear, she was fighting for her life," Kaluzny said. "She had no choice."

Holmes is being held in jail as her case makes its way through the court.
