Man charged with attempted murder in shooting of Good Samaritan in Ann Arbor

Victim was reportedly attempting to break up a fight

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A man has been formally charged in the March 24 shooting of a DoorDash driver who was trying to break up a fight in Ann Arbor.

It happened on March 24 on North Main Street, near Miller Avenue. Prosecutors said 33-year-old Joshua Dye shot the man who was trying to stop him from assaulting a woman.

In court on Friday, April 5, police said Dye presented a “significant risk” to the community. Prosecutors said he has a criminal record that includes a conviction for first-degree child abuse.

“Witnesses include a family with young children walking back from the Hands-On Museum,” said Ann Arbor Police Det. Brad Rougeau.

Authorities said the DoorDash driver was on North Main Street when he saw the assault, got out of his vehicle and approached them. Police said when he locked eyes with Dye, he tried to run away.

“He was essentially chased down, and stalked as he was trying to remove himself from the situation,” Rougeau said.

The victim, a 23-year-old military veteran, was shot in the upper body before he could close his car door. He managed to drive a few blocks away before calling 911. He was less than 1,000 feet from the police station, so a sergeant ran over to help. The victim was taken to a hospital.

“Frankly, were it not for the fact we were within so close proximity to a level one trauma center and that officers arrived so quickly, he may not be alive today,” Rougeau said.

“The consequences for this victim are severe, in and out of the hospital, two surgeries, these charges are obviously very significant,” said Alyson Robbins, with the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office.

Dye was charged with assault with intent to murder, felonious assault, felony firearm, possession of a weapon by a prohibited person, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person and carrying a concealed weapon.

During testimony about bond that included Dye being unhoused and lacking a fixed address, he had an outburst and attempted to speak over Rougeau. The judge set his bond at $1 million.

The woman he is accused of assaulting is expected to be OK.
