Bicyclist seriously hurt after being struck by car in Commerce Township

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A Commerce Township bicyclist is seriously hurt after being struck by a car while crossing a road Wednesday morning.

The crash happened just after 6 a.m. on Aug. 5 on W Maple Road near Grandview Drive.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, a 65-year-old Walled Lake woman was driving northwest on West Maple Road and approached the Michigan Air Line Trail crossing. At the same time, a 48-year-old Commerce Township man riding a bicycle was traveling northeast on the trail and reportedly failed to yield at the marked crosswalk while crossing West Maple Road, resulting in him being struck by the car.

The Commerce Township man was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition. The Walled Lake driver was not hurt and stayed at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said the Commerce Township man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Investigators do not believe speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
