ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Pets owned by low-income families, seniors and residents facing homelessness or financial hardship can get free vaccinations during the Humane Society of Huron Valley’s “Friends for Life” event on Saturday, May 4.

The vaccine clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis at the Manchester United Methodist Church in Manchester.

“Pets play an invaluable role in our lives,” said HSHV Friends for Life Coordinator Alicia Curley. “Studies show companion animals make us happier and healthier—but most people don’t need research to tell them that. Of course, the reverse is true, too. We’ve seen people give up their meals in order to keep their pets. We don’t want people to have to choose between keeping themselves well or their pets well.”

Friends for Life is the humane society’s program to help keep pets with their owners, especially those experiencing financial, health, transportation or housing challenges. Services include basic pet supplies, veterinary care, short-term housing and advice.

Pets can receive free rabies vaccinations, distemper shots, and microchips during the May 4 event. Mobile grooming service Ruff Revolution will be on site offering free nail trims to vaccinated pets.

Appointments aren’t necessary but pre-registration for vaccinations is encouraged. Qualifying community members should sign their pets up early as the waitlist will be cut off at 3:30 p.m. or when clinic slots are full.

Pre-register here or by calling 734-661-3550.

“Whenever possible, our job is to prevent pets from becoming homeless,” said HSHV CEO and President Tanya Hilgendorf. “We’ve got a lovely shelter, but it’s full. Programs like Friends for Life help keep loved pets with their loving families, where they belong. We are so grateful to the Buhr Family, the Banfield Foundation, Manchester United Methodist Church, Ruff Revolution, and all of our supporters who make this possible.”

Manchester United Methodist Church is at 501 Ann Arbor St. in Manchester.
