DETROIT – Police are searching for the person involved in a drive-by shooting that left three people injured on Detroit’s east side after someone in a black SUV opened fire on them.
The incident occurred on Tuesday (July 21) when officers from the Detroit Police Department’s 9th Precinct responded around 7:15 p.m. to the 11000 block of Whithorn Street after the city’s ShotSpotter gunfire detection system alerted officers to possible shots fired.
Multiple 911 callers also reported the shooting.
DPD Public Information Officer Jalon Nelson said two men and one woman, all believed to be in their 30s, were standing outside when a black SUV drove by, and someone inside fired multiple rounds.
All three victims were struck multiple times and taken to a Metro Detroit hospital.
One man was listed in critical condition, while the other two victims were in temporary serious condition, Nelson said.
Police believe the victims were the intended targets and said the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident.
“At this time, this does appear to have been an isolated incident, so we don’t have reason right now to believe that there is a threat to the public,” Nelson said.
Investigators have not identified a suspect.
The only description released is that the suspect vehicle was a black SUV.
Nelson said the ShotSpotter system generated the initial alert, allowing officers to respond quickly before several 911 calls were received.
“As you know, ShotSpotter was recently extended,” Nelson said. “ShotSpotter was the first alert that we got for this incident, followed by several 911 calls, and our officers responded.”
Police are continuing to investigate and are working to identify those responsible.
