Michigan basketball national champion Trey McKenney to throw out first pitch at Detroit Tigers game

McKenney capped off his freshman season with some huge plays to help Michigan win its first title since 1989

DETROITMichigan Wolverines national champion Trey McKenney will throw out the first pitch at the Detroit Tigers game.

The Tigers are taking on the Texas Rangers inside Comerica Park on Friday (May 1) at 6:40 p.m., and he is expected to get to the ballpark for batting practice around 4 p.m.

McKenney, from Flint, capped off his freshman season by making clutch plays, including a late-minute three-pointer in the NCAA Tournament National Championship game vs. the UConn Huskies.

He later iced the game with some big free throws to help the University of Michigan win its first men’s basketball championship since 1989, winning 69-63 inside Lucas Oil Stadium.

As a freshman, McKenney averaged 9.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 0.9 assists for the Wolverines, while coming off the bench as the sixth man.

McKenney was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team, shooting 46.2% from the field and 39.1% from the three-point line, leading the team in made three pointers.

McKenney has vowed to come back for his sophomore season to lead the national champions back to the Final Four, which will be held in downtown Detroit inside Ford Field, the home of the Detroit Lions.
