Fake DMV text messages prompt warning from Michigan State Police amid rising complaints

Michigan has a Secretary of State, not a DMV

The Michigan State Police are issuing a warning about a scam text that many people are receiving.

It claims to be from the State of Michigan DMV, so that’s your first red flag, since we don’t have a Department of Motor Vehicles; instead, we have a Secretary of State.

The text states that you have an outstanding ticket and threatens various legal actions, including suspension of your driver’s license, if you don’t pay within a few days.

On Monday (June 9), the MSP Jackson post received 10 complaints about the text that people are currently receiving.

“These text messages being circulated currently are a scam,” said a representative for SOS. “The Michigan Secretary of State does not notify drivers of fines via text. Please be aware and alert.”

The Secretary of State will never request payment via text message. Don’t click the link and just delete the text.

This is the second scam we have learned about, as a Local 4 producer was sent a lengthy text on Tuesday (June 3).

If you feel like you’re constantly receiving scam calls, texts, or emails, you’re not alone. A producer at Local 4 was sent a lengthy text message Tuesday (June 3) afternoon. (Copyright 2025 by WDIV ClickOnDetroit - All rights reserved.)
