VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI – Two people called 911 about a murder suicide that was going to happen in Van Buren County but two people were dead by the time police arrived. One of the people involved called 911 to report a murder-suicide that was going to happen, and one of that person’s relatives who he told also called 911 prior to the shooting, Michigan State Police officials said in a news release. Westerphal had called 911 before 9:30 p.m., Jan. 27, to say report a murder suicide that was going to happen. Phillips had called a relative prior to the shooting to tell them what was going to happen and that relative also called 911, police said. The driver of the semi, a man from Toledo, Ohio, was not injured and all indicators suggest he was wearing his seatbelt, police said. With the assistance of the York County Sheriff’s Office in Maine, familial DNA reference samples from a possible brother were obtained. Investigators also located 1997 news articles from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel detailing the unidentified woman’s contacts just prior to her going missing.

Police said the suspect driver ran several red lights and shut off the vehicle’s lights. State police later located the Charger traveling at a high rate of speed in Detroit and began following it. Troopers followed the Charger as it traveled throughout Detroit and eventually westbound on I-94 toward Washtenaw County. Troopers began lifesaving measures by reopening the driver’s airway and administering three doses of Narcan, a medication commonly used to counter decreased breathing in opioid overdose. At about 10:25 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, a trooper was standing near her patrol car attending to an unrelated three-car crash on eastbound I-94 near Chene Street in Hamtramck when a passing driver lost control of their vehicle, police said. The driver was traveling too fast for the icy road conditions and lost control, hitting one of the cars involved in the previous crash, pushing that car into the trooper, police said. The Michigan State Police ask all drivers to use extra caution while traveling during the holiday weekend. Several troopers suffered minor injuries and multiple patrol cars were hit during the recent blizzard.

BERRIEN COUNTY, MI — The Michigan State Police has reported two major crashes in the same area of eastbound I-94 on Friday, Dec. 23, with the first one involving nine semi trucks, hauling tractor trailers. No major injuries were reported in the either crash, Lt. DuWayne Robinson confirmed with MLive. Police have released video footage of the first crash, which happened at around 9:30 a.m. Friday morning. The Michigan State Police has reported multiple closures related to crashes along I-94 Friday morning, including at other locations in Berrien, Van Buren, Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties. Among those, eastbound I-94 at mile marker 41 in Berrien County is shutdown to a semi-tractor trailer crash, according to a tweet from MSP. Seven miles further east at mile marker 48 in Van Buren County, a patrol vehicle has been reportedly hit. On westbound I-94, exit 60 near Paw Paw is also closed due to a crash, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. Also on westbound I-94, near mile marker 88 in Kalamazoo County, a jackknifed semi is blocking the roadway, police said. The Michigan Department of Transportation is also reporting a closure at exit 34 on eastbound I-94 near Benton Harbor.

CALHOUN COUNTY, MI — A Battle Creek man is dead after a snowmobile crash in Calhoun County. The crash occurred shortly before 11:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 22, in Newton Township south of Battle Creek and west of Marshall in the southwestern portion of the county, Michigan State Police said in a news release. The 49-year-old Battle Creek man was traveling south, across B Drive South near 11 Mile Road, when he entered a field and the snowmobile struck a rock, causing the man to lose control, police said. A 41-year-old female passenger, also from Battle Creek, sustained injuries and was transported via ambulance to Bronson Battle Creek for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were a contributing factor in the crash, police said.

HARING TOWNSHIP, MI – A Michigan man who claims he was recruited by two men to cash fake checks has been arrested and charged, police said. Upon arrival, the trooper located the suspect in the lobby of the credit union, police said. The trooper asked Nathaniel Wayne Street, 25, of Comstock Park, how he got to the credit union. The suspect claimed two men recruited him to cash fake checks. It came out that the suspect had successfully cashed several fake checks in the Petoskey area, police said.
