Why we can't ignore a crying baby

Scientists find an emotional trigger

We bought this really cute onesie for our daughter Olivia. She was smiling away and I went to grab the camera, by the time I clicked the button she started crying and created this most appropriate photo!

A recent study has found why it is virtually impossible to ignore the sound of a crying baby.

The sound of a child crying triggers an emotional response in the brain -- even if the person doesn't have children. This is why people traveling with or near small children have troubles sleeping.

Researchers from Oxford University scanned the brains of 30 people who had no children. They had the participants listen to the sound of babies and adults crying and various animal distress noises such as dogs whining and cats meowing.

The results revealed that when the baby sounds were being played, participants had much higher amounts of emotion when they heard a baby's cry. The response was the same in both men and women, and came after just 100 milliseconds.

Researchers say the brain likely developed a response to the noise to allow people to react faster to their child's needs.
