Ascension Michigan Heart Report: Dr. Martin

Understanding Mitral Valves and Treatments

Question: What mitral valve disease?

Dr. Martin: The Mitral Valve is the valve in the heart that allows blood from the lungs to go into the heart to be pumped to the body, most of the time if that valve is malfunctioning or has a disease, it’s leaking. We can repair 90% of those valves and give the patient back a normally functioning valve.

Question: Are there minimally invasive treatment options?

Dr. Martin: Yes, it is heart surgery, but we can do a minimally invasive mitral valve repair to allow the patient to have a smaller incision and a more rapid recovery and much nicer cosmetic results.
