Kidneys remove waste, adjust fluid and mineral balance

Do you know if your kidneys are healthy? If you don’t know -- or aren’t sure -- you’re not alone. Most people don’t give much thought to their kidneys.

Thursday, May 14, is World Kidney Day. It’s an important time to raise awareness about kidney disease -- often a silent killer in African American communities.

Kidneys are in the upper back part of a person’s belly. They’re technically even behind the abdominal compartment. Inside each kidney there’s an average of one million microscopic filters that remove waste and adjust a person’s fluid and mineral balance.

Those filters clean about 45 gallons of liquid each day, but they distill that down to an average of only one and a half quarts of urine a day. Without kidney function, a person will die.

Henry Ford Health and the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan will offer free kidney screenings for community members at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2024.
