Matrix Basement Finishing transforms underused spaces into custom living areas

Live in the D tours one of their recently finished basements in Northville

For most homeowners, the basement is an afterthought. Boxes, old furniture, the occasional treadmill gathering dust. Nate Keller wants to change that.

Keller, Vice President of Matrix Basement Finishing, walked Live in the D’s April Morton through a completed Northville home renovation that includes a home theater, a gym, a bar, a children’s playroom, and a powder room - all tucked beneath one family’s main floor.

“Health and wellness is big with a lot of our clients,” Keller said, gesturing toward a mirrored workout space just steps from the powder room vanity. The layout, he explained, is intentional - guests can freshen up, kids can disappear into their own room, and parents can claim the bar or the theater depending on the mood.

The theater is the crown jewel. Stadium-style reclining chairs face a large screen flanked by in-wall speakers and a subwoofer. A mini fridge means no trips upstairs. The room is built for immersion.

“Who wouldn’t want to be here on a Friday or Saturday night with the family watching a movie?” Keller said. The room features “extra soundproofing, so it’s really quiet,” he added - a detail that matters when the kids have their own movie running two rooms away.

The finished basement feels nothing like one. Accent lighting, tile work, sconce fixtures, and an open-concept layout connecting the lounge to the bar give the space a polish typically reserved for above-ground living areas. “You don’t feel like you’re in a basement when you’re down here,” Keller said.

A project of this scope is not a weekend flip. “It can be several months - anywhere from 12 to 16 weeks from planning phase all the way to the end,” Keller said. The company handles permitting and coordinates licensed trades throughout. “We take care of all your inspections. All of our licensed electricians and plumbers and HVAC guys come in here,” he said.

Not every client needs a home cinema. Matrix works across the full range of scope and budget. “It doesn’t have to be this extravagant, but we can do this type of work or we can do something simple for your family as well,” Keller said.
