“When you see folks who look like you, who are doing something similar that you want to do, it’s the best way to go,” said new golfer Paige Simmons.

Founders on the Fairway is the brainchild of Black Tech Saturdays. The co-founder Alexa Turnage says “with everything going on, golf is a great way way to find friends and get some vitamin. And we’re using golf as a bridge.”

Held at the Belle Isle Golf Center, the annual event pairs beginnings with seasoned golfers.

Organizers say the goal is to demystify the sport.

“So many deals are done on the golf course,” Turnage said. “Today we’re getting people to practice the sport and build relationships before you get out there.”

Players say the skills they learn here, will transfer on-and-off the course.

“You’re learning patience, strategy, how to connect with people and how to get better at something with time - and it takes perseverance to do that,” Simmons said as she practiced her golf swing.
