Medjool dates are the secret ingredient your summer cookout is missing

Sweeten your barbecue - no sugar needed

Move over, brown sugar. A registered dietitian is making the case that Medjool dates deserve a starring role at the summer cookout, from the drink cooler to the grill.

Samaria Garrett, RDN, appeared on Live in the D in partnership with Natural Delights Medjool Dates to showcase recipes timed to Juneteenth celebrations - and the through line was a small, wrinkled fruit that she says most people overlook.

“Red foods. They have historically symbolized resilience and strength in Juneteenth,” Garrett said, explaining how she wove Medjool dates into vibrant, red-hued dishes to honor the holiday’s traditions.

Her lineup included two drinks - a Hibiscus Date Cooler inspired by the traditional African drink sorrel, and a Watermelon Ginger Date Refresher. “The Medjool dates are paired here, and they provide natural sweetness with no added sugar,” she said. “Both of these drinks are refreshing, festive, and perfect for summer gatherings with family and friends during this Juneteenth holiday.”

The dates didn’t stop at drinks. Garrett demonstrated a date-based barbecue glaze - built with apple cider vinegar and smoked paprika - that she served over salmon and asparagus. “This honestly might be one of my favorite recipes because it really surprises people. So, when blended, these Natural Delights Medjool dates create a naturally sweet base that is perfect for barbecue sauce,” she said.

She also presented a charred collard and cabbage slaw featuring chopped dates. “I love this dish here because it really pays homage to those traditional greens like collard greens while providing a little bit of a different flavor,” Garrett said.

“I hope that these recipes really inspired viewers to try something different during this Juneteenth holiday,” she added.
