Heather Seczawa said she saw Martel tumble and went to help.
"We all ran out there, me, my mom, my sister, everybody,"she said. "There was a motorcycle and a guy laying down on the ground, face down. I thought he was dead."
Seczawa said Martel wasn't wearing a helmet.
Martel's neighbor, Macomb County firefighter Dwayne Thompson, said Martel was an adventurer and loved to ride motorcycles.
"Mike has fun. He has fun with everything he does. I think he's really passionate about his job," Thompson said. "I'm just going to pray for him, I'm going to pray for Colleen and I'm going to pray for his kids."
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Isaac Jogues Parish, 21120 Benjamin in St. Clair Shores.
He will be buried at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy.
