Southeast Michigan is expecting 2 rounds of rain, thunderstorms -- here’s the timing, storm hazards

4Warn Weather – Southeast Michigan will start Tuesday dry with sun and clouds. After a comfortable start to the day, afternoon high temperatures will reach the mid to upper 70s.

Winds today will be out of the southwest at 10-15 mph with gusts into the mid 20s.

Round 1 - Today

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will begin to develop midday, continuing through the afternoon and evening hours.

A few storms may be strong, and the Storm Prediction Center has placed most of Southeast Michigan under a Marginal Risk (level 1 out of 5) for severe weather. Southwestern Livingston, western Washtenaw, and western Lenawee are under a Slight Risk (level 2 out of 5).

Damaging winds and large hail will be the main threats with any severe storms today with isolated tornadoes possible. The main time frame will be between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Rain will move out near midnight, giving us the chance to dry out overnight and into Wednesday morning. We’ll be partly cloudy tonight with overnight lows in the low to mid 50s.

Round 2 - Wednesday

Rain moves back in tomorrow afternoon. Widespread rain will move through Southeast Michigan through the evening hours.

Rain will be heavy at times into the late-night.

Strong thunderstorms will be possible Wednesday, also. The Storm Prediction Center has placed Southeast Michigan under Marginal (level 1 out of 5) and Slight (level 2 out of 5) Risks for severe weather Wednesday.

Between 1″ and 2″ of rainfall are expected across Southeast Michigan, but localized areas could see 3+" of rainfall. Amounts over 1″ will be possible in less than an hour. Because of this, flash flooding will be our main concern with the round of rain and storms tomorrow. Large hail and gusty winds will also be possible, along with isolated tornadoes.

The heaviest rain moves out toward midnight for most locations, closer to 2 a.m. Showers will linger into early Thursday before we dry out.

High temperatures Wednesday will be in the mid 70s before we’re slightly cooler Thursday, reaching the low 70s. Highs Friday will be in the mid 70s with plenty of sunshine.
