Farmington City Council Reverses Decision and Stays in SMART

Residents to vote on deal in August

FARMINGTON, Mich. – In what has to be viewed as a dramatic turnaround, the Farmington City Council voted unanimously to opt-in to SMART and allow their residents to vote in August.

This decision keeps SMART Fixed Route buses, Connector services as well as locally supported Community Transit buses rolling for the residents of Farmington. In a previous meeting held on January 17, the Farmington City Council opted-out of SMART in a 4 to 1 decision.

Farmington Hills also considered opting out of SMART at a city council meeting last week. The Council voted 4 to 3 to stay with SMART giving their residents access to the network of SMART services in the region.

"We are pleased that the Farmington City Council reconsidered their decision and is still part of the SMART service area," said John C. Hertel, general manager. "Public transit is critical to this region and I believe Farmington and Farmington Hills officials recognize their residents, who previously voted overwhelmingly in support of SMART's millage, want access to the network of services SMART provides."

SMART is southeast Michigan's only regional transit system, serving Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.
