Couple confronts convicted drunken driver who hit them in court

Durant family disappointed with Charles Crowdus' sentencing

PONTIAC, Mich. – It was an emotional day in court on Monday as a couple came face to face with the man who changed their lives forever.

Charles Crowdus hit Donna and Frank Durant's car on March 5, 2011, on Lapeer Road near The Palace of Auburn Hills.

"After the accident, I was left with multiple bruises and lacerations, a broken neck and my left ear was almost completely severed off," Frank Durant said. "My friend's son, who was sitting next to me, was ejected from the vehicle and was laying unconscious in the road.  The cries from his parents as they realized he was laying in the road will forever haunt me."

Police said Crowdus was drunk at the time and had a suspended license.

He also has three previous drunk driving convictions from 1984, 1989, & 1990.

In 1985, he was convicted of manslaughter and also on that same day was convicted of breaking and entering a building with attempt to commit larceny.

And while Crowdus was sentenced to 350 days in jail on Monday, the Durants said they still felt justice was not served.

"I'm very disappointed with what the judge has sentenced him to. For all that I've been though," Frank Durant said.

Crowdus was also sentenced to three years of probation, ordered to undergo random drug and alcohol testing and is not allowed to purchase to possess alcohol.
