71-year-old man rescued after snowmobile breaks through ice on Pleasant Lake in Waterford Township

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 71-year-old man was rescued on New Year’s Eve after his snowmobile broke through the ice on Pleasant Lake in Waterford Township, officials said.

Emergency crews received a call around 5:45 p.m. from the man’s wife reporting the incident.

Two nearby neighbors tried to find the man on the ice but were unable to locate him and returned safely to shore.

Firefighters from the Waterford Fire Department later found the 71-year-old and brought him to safety.

He was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents that ice conditions can change rapidly and may be unsafe, even during cold weather.

They urge extreme caution around frozen lakes and waterways and advise against traveling on ice unless it has been confirmed safe.
