FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. –
Buyers had just minutes to look inside the vault and then it was bidding time at the University Moving and Storage auction in Farmington Hills.
"My daughter is looking for some household furniture. So we will keep an eye out," said Rick Yearkey of Croswell.
The storage bidding started just minutes after each vault was opened and as one bidder put it, "It all comes down how quick can you look and make a snap decision on yes this is worth whatever, some of these have gone for $1,500. Some of have gone for $50," said Dirk Christiansen of Plymouth.
"I got the pickup truck. We will probably load that up and I will be trying to find a place to put the stuff before the night's out," said David Walker of Detroit.
All the mystery stuff inside the storage vaults is unclaimed property. This is the first time the company has held an auction; they plan to do it again next year.
"What we do is we got a lot of high end clients that hire us to come into their house and basically professionally packed, load all their professional items, all their furniture, bring into storage. When the market crashed in 06 we ended up having a lot people who just went under and have not been paying," said Joe Marcero from University Moving and Storage.
Now those items are up for auction to bidders seeking hidden treasures.
"Someone just bid $350 for a bunch of garbage cans," said Kathy Woisky of Romulus.
A painting tucked in a couch inside one of the vaults caught the eye of an art conservator who bid $125 for it.
"I love paintings that need to be a little repaired and I can resale them or keep them from my own house for decorations," said Jennifer Lis.
