Tips you need to know before exercising outdoors

Experts say you have to think safety to keep yourself protected

DETROIT – Before you go on your walk, run or bike ride, experts say you have to think safety to keep yourself protected from potential attackers.

It happens every year: People who exercise outdoors become the target for crime.

Last month, a 23-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint while jogging on the trail along Hines Drive.

The suspect had been hiding in the bushes and with headphones in, the woman never saw it coming.

Kirsten Meyer runs along Hines Drive -- morning or night -- always on her own, always in the zone, but that may have to change.

Here are a few tips you need to know before heading outdoors:

--Call someone and just tell them where you plan on exercising.

--Turn down the music to make sure you can still pay attention to your surroundings.

--Buddy up: If you're not alone, the chances of being approached can drop dramatically.
