Hamtramck man drowns in Port Austin Harbor

Brothers were trying to swim across break wall gap

PORT AUSTIN, Mich. – A Hamtramck man drowned Saturday evening when he and his brother tried to swim across the break wall gap of Port Austin Horbor at 6:27 p.m.

The two brothers became exhausted while swimming in the choppy, strong current caused from a westerly-blowing wind. The surviving brother, also of Hamtramck, reported that he made it to the rock break wall, but his brother was too exhausted and fell below the surface.

A Southfield man passing on his watercraft tried to grab the victim, but he slipped below the surface.

Members of the Harbor Beach Coast Guard got the surviving brother off the rock break wall and searched for the victim. Divers found the victim around 7:40 p.m. and initiated CPR, but the man was dead.
