KIMBALL TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Authorities say a 64-year-old man was injured when the ultralight airplane he was flying went down in St. Clair County.
The sheriff's department says Douglas Widmar of New Baltimore took off Thursday evening from a private air strip in the 700 block of Sturdevant Road. Shortly after he left the ground, a witness saw the plane dip once and then nose-dive.
The plane landed wing first, flipped and ended upright. The crash happened in Kimball Township, about 50 miles northeast of Detroit.
Widmar was the only person on the plane. He was transported by Tri-Hospital to Lake Huron Medical Center in Port Huron before being taken to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital with multiple injuries. At this time, he is listed in critical condition.
