DETROIT – A 13-year-old boy from Detroit has been charged in connection with the nonfatal shooting of his 42-year-old father, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said.
The teen is not being charged as an adult defendant but has been given an adult designation.
If convicted, that designation gives the judge the option to sentence the juvenile as a juvenile, as an adult, or under a blended juvenile sentence that could allow an adult sentence if the juvenile is not rehabilitated.
The shooting occurred on Aug. 11 at about 6:42 p.m., when Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 18600 block of Bretton Drive for a reported shooting.
Officers found the victim on the front porch suffering from a gunshot wound to the back.
Medics transported him to a local hospital for treatment.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the teen allegedly produced and fired a handgun at his father, wounding him.
He then allegedly took the victim’s vehicle and the family dog and fled.
Officials located the boy later that day in Troy, Ohio.
The teen has been charged with one count of assault with intent to murder, one count of discharge of a firearm in or at a building, one count of unlawfully driving away an automobile, and three counts of felony firearm.
The 13-year-old is currently being held in Miami County, Ohio, while officials work to extradite him to Michigan.
