4 killed, 1 remains in critical condition after crash on Detroit's east side

DETROIT – Detroit Public Schools officials tell Local 4 grief counselors will be available for students at Osborn High School after four former and current students were killed in a crash over the weekend.

The victims, whose names are not yet being released, were in a Jeep Cherokee that hit a concrete post and caught fire around 1 a.m. Sunday near East 7 Mile Road and Stotter Street.

Surveillance cameras from a nearby business captured the crash, and footage shows several people rushing to the wreck to try to help.

A fifth person is hospitalized in critical condition, according to Detroit police. It was erroneously originally reported by multiple sources that the fifth person had died.

Police said the cause of the crash is still under investigation, but speed appears to have been a factor.
