Suspect in custody in Friday night arson in Monroe

Mother, 2 kids escaped harm

MONROE, Mich. – Fire officials are investigating a suspected arson after a woman and her two children escaped a burning duplex in Monroe.

The fire happened on the 200 block of W. Willow Street around 5 p.m.

The fire started in the unoccupied apartment in the duplex and spread to the adjoining apartment. The woman and her children were able to escape the fire without injury

A husky puppy was killed in the fire.

A suspect was seen leaving the apartment before the fire was observed. Monroe police said a 25-year-old person was arrested in connection with the arson.

The suspect was lodged at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department Jail on charges of home invasion. Further charges are expected.

The investigation has been turned over to the Monroe Police Department’s Detective Buereau and the Arson Investigation Team.

The blaze was extinguished by the Monroe Fire Department, Monroe Public Safety Department and the Frenchtown Fire Department.
