Warren voters to decide mayor's term limits

Voters in Warren will decide in August whether the mayor is eligible for more terms.

The mayor’s office has a maximum of 12 years. Current Mayor Jim Fouts is serving his third term.

Last month, the Warren City Council voted in favor of asking voters whether a mayor should be able to serve up to 20 years in office. State officials needed only to approve the language of the motion.

Attorney General Bill Schuette said in a letter to acting city attorney Mary Michaels, “This office has examined the ballot language for the proposed amendment as set forth in the city council’s resolution. This office concludes that the ballot language for the amendment conforms to the requirements of Section 21 of the Home Rule City Act.”

Fouts said he played no role in extending the maximum length of service for a Warren mayor.

“All three proposals, the two mileage and term limit extension, were all approved by the attorney general’s office so all three ballot proposals will be on the August ballot," Fouts said.

The vote will be held on Aug. 2.
