How to report an outage in no time

Whether if it’s because of a raging thunderstorm, twisted and fallen trees or poles, or some other disruption to the energy grid, power outages are no fun for anyone involved. Every day, the teams at DTE Energy are improving technologies and dedicating resources to improve the energy grid so you can live life with minimal interruption.

But, outages can be an occasional reality, so knowing how to identify and flag one for us is key for restoring services in a timely manner.

Most outages are caused by natural weather-related incidents (approximately 70% of incidents in the United States) and only last a few minutes On the other hand, sustained outages typically last longer than five minutes; these are the kind that need to be reported as soon as possible. Here is what to do:

  • Dialing with a landline or mobile device: Pick up the phone and call us at 1-800-477-4747 to get connected with our straightforward automated system. Have your zip code and account number handy and follow the prompts until it says your report has been submitted. You can also get a restoration estimate while on the line.
  • Submitting an online form through DTE: If you have a data connection you can use your device to report a problem by sending your phone number or home/business address. While you’re online, you can load our interactive outage map to see exactly where the issues are taking place, and search by zip code.
  • Opening your DTE Energy mobile app: Have you given our easy-to-use customer app a try? The Outage Center permits you to report problems and check real-time status updates without opening up your browser. You can also use it for other emergency situations like downed power lines and gas leaks.
  • Utilizing our specialized forms for traffic light failures: Traffic light outages are quite dangerous for drivers in busy areas as they try to navigate intersections to get where they need to go, and can increase street congestion for miles as a result. We have residential and municipality report forms, though in the event of a blackout, households and businesses are the first priorities.
