Wheelchair ramp built for 96-year-old woman confined to home on Detroit's east side

Detroit Councilman Scott Benson, contractor Dan Villarreal team up to help woman

DETROIT – A community came together to build a ramp for a 96-year-old Detroit woman who has been confined to her home for eight months because she can't walk.

Johnnie Foster has been confined to her house on Detroit's east side for eight months because she has to use a wheelchair and her home had no ramp. She couldn't leave the front porch, but that all changed Friday morning.

Foster describes herself as a sassy woman with a heart of gold and deep roots in her faith.

"Do I feel blessed? It's a blessing to be in this world," Foster said.

But about eight months ago, Foster was trying to get into her home when she fell and hurt her knees. She has been confined to a wheelchair ever since.

Foster's story made it to Detroit Councilman Scott Benson, who found contractor Dan Villarreal. They worked together to build a wheelchair ramp at her home for free.

Foster has her freedom back, so what is she going to do first?

"I'm going to church," she said.

DGV Contracting has committed to building 10 more wheelchair ramps. Benson's office is taking requests and putting them through an application process.
